Srinagar, Aug 06 (KNO): In the past 12 years, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a surge in power demand by more than 24 percent.
The figures further said that from the fiscal 2014-15 to 2025-26, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a surge in demand of 3,971 MU.
The latest official figures reveal that the annual energy demand in J&K rose from 16,214 Million Units (MU) in 2014-15 to 20,185 MU in 2025-26.
It also said that the peak power demand at 20,374 MU was recorded in 2024-25.
According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Government of India (GoI) informed the Lower House that the actual power supply position of the region jumped from 13,119 MU in 2014-15 to 20,166 MU in 2025-26 that amounts to a massive 53.7% increase in available energy.
The house was informed that in 2014-15, Jammu and Kashmir had an energy requirement of 16,214 MU against the availability of 13,119 MU.
It also said that in 2015-16, the region had an energy requirement of 16,572 MU against the availability of 14,037 MU followed by 17,398 MU in 2016-17 against the availability of 14,194 MU.
It was also informed that in the year 2017-18 J&K has an energy requirement of 18,808 MU against the availability of 15,050 MU followed by 18,988 MU in the year 2018-19 against the total availability of 15,616 MU.
The documents further said that in the year 2019-20 Jammu and Kashmir had a energy requirement of 20,025MU against the total availability of 16,259 MU.
In 2020-21, there was a requirement of 19,773 MU against the availability of 17,222 MU followed by requirement of 19,957 MU in the year 2021-22 against the total availability of 18,434 MU.
The house was further informed that in the year 2022-23 Jammu and Kashmir had an energy requirement of 19,639 MU against the total availability of 19,322 MU followed by 20,040 MU requirement in 2023-24 against the total availability of 19,763 MU.
It also said that in the year 2024-25, J&K had a power requirement of 20,374 MU against the requirement of 20,283 MU and in the year 2025-26, the region had an energy requirement of 20,185 MU against the total availability of 20,166 MU.
For the ongoing fiscal till June 2026, Jammu and Kashmir had recorded a requirement of 4,769 MU against the availability of 4,739 MU—(KNO)
